Secrets of the Nurse Healers

April 21, 2008

Before Nurses can reveal their healing secrets, they must acknowledge 10 things:
1. that they are healers
We are attracted to nursing in our inner most being because we have the gift of healing. So why do most of us deny our innate healing abilities? The answer to this lies in exploring the belief system we were taught as children:
* the “I m not good enough” syndrome
* comparing yourself with other people in your life
* not owning your personal power
* fear of exploring new ideas, new lifestyles
* allowing judgment of others to supercede compassion for another person s situation
In order to fully allow healing abilities to flourish, we need to:
* live in the present moment-one way to do this is by learning to breathe diaphramatically from breath to breath
* don t get overwelmed by the busyness of your life
* appreciate everything that is happening NOW, no matter if it seems “bad” or if you ve labeled it a mistake
* that mistakes are a perception, not a reality
* believing in mistakes is a self-imposed prison
* by viewing mistakes as a stepping stone to enlightenment, you nurture your healing abilities and patients want you to be their nurse
2. that they were drawn to the profession because of their healing abilities
Before choosing nursing as a life-long love, I sought out healing experiences (like soaking in mineral springs, laughing, exercise, lying on of hands), books about healing, healing people -you know, the kind of people who make you feel wonderful in their presence! This interest in healing led to the eventual choice of going to nursing school. Many of us are not aware of our deep seeded healing abilities. We may think that the science of medicine drew us to the profession in the beginning. But if the art and science of medicine do not merge and inform our everyday practice, then we create two dimensional experiences in our daily patient/nurse interactions. The art and science of medicine is a balancing act, one worth the juggling precision. Blending this with the intention to be a healing presence for everyone we meet today will allow our innate healing abilities to flourish and prosper!
3. that nursing offers a gigantic opportunity to heal many, many times over the course of one 8 to 12 to 16 hour shift
“The important thing is not to think much but to love much; and so do that which best stirs your love.
Saint Teresa of Avila “Anterior Castle”
The healing experience need not be confined to our time spent doing nursing duties. We must restore ourselves by self-healing modalities.
* time spent alone
* daily walking to restore inner reservoirs of creativity
* learning to meditate, making it a daily discipline
* exercise, drinks lots of water, sleep well (the lost art)
* record your dreams
* seek balance in all things
* listen to those inner urgings that propel you in new directions
4. that nurses are angelic partners to bring about healing
Nurses, in order to be an angelic partner, we must first acknowledge that angels wait behind the scenes, waiting for the nod from us that YES! Please come and help me NOW!!
5. that angels can be called to help whenever the nurse remembers to call
Sometimes remembering is the biggest obstacle to getting the help we need.
6. that angels will respond
Ask and ye shall receive–every time.
7. that it s possible to recognize the angelic intervention, to acknowledge it and to join in the healing flow of the angelic help
The magic of the intervention requires a “Thank You” from us– without exception.
8. that nurses are angels
The great healing potential of every nurse automatically places us all in the company of angels.
9. that patients want nurses to call on the angels to help
One day, our patients will thank the angels because we remembered.
10. and that patients know something that nurses have forgotten: nurses are angels of mercy

Top 10 Questions and Answers on Atkins Diet

April 17, 2008

1. What is Atkins Diet?

Dr. Atkins diet, first introduced in 1972, is strictly
focused on limiting carbohydrate consumption.

That is why it is called a low-carb, high-protein diet or
sometimes simply a low-carb diet, together with other
diets such as South Beach Diet, Power Protein Diet etc…

2. What are carbohydrates, and where can they be found?

Carbohydrates provide your body with its basic fuel, very
much like a car engine and gasoline. Glucose goes directly
into the cells, which convert it into the energy they need.

There are two types of carbohydrates:

Simple carbohydrates (also called “sugars” on food
package labels): glucose, fructose and galactose are
referred to as monosaccharides. Lactose, sucrose and
maltose are called disaccharides (they contain two
monosaccharides).

Complex carbohydrates (“starches”), made up of chains
of glucose molecules, which is simply a way plants store
glucose.

Starches can be found in great quantities in most
grains (wheat, corn, oats, rice) and things like potatoes
and plantains.

Your digestive system breaks a starch back down into
its component glucose molecules so that the glucose
can enter your bloodstream.

A complex carbohydrate is digested more slowly than
simple carbohydrates because it takes longer to break
down a starch.

Complex carbs can be either high in fiber such as
broccoli or low in fiber such as bananas or potatoes.

But carbohydrates are not the only substances the body
uses: it also needs proteins and fats.

3. What are proteins and where can they be found?

A protein is any chain of amino acids. Carbohydrates
provide cells with energy, proteins provide cells with the
building material they need to grow and maintain
their structure.

Protein can be found in both animal and vegetable foods.
Most animal sources (meat, milk, eggs) provide “complete
protein”: they contain all of the essential amino acids.

Vegetable foods usually have few or none of the essential
amino acids. Example: rice is low in isoleucine and lysine.

Some vegetable sources contain quite a bit of protein —
things like nuts, beans, soybeans, etc. are all high in protein.

4. What are fats and where can they be found?

Fats are also an important part of our diet. Many foods
contain fat in different amounts. High-fat foods include
dairy products like butter and cream as well as mayonnaise
and oils.

There are two kinds of fats: saturated and unsaturated.

Saturated fats are normally solid at room temperature,
while unsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature.

Vegetable oils are the best examples of unsaturated fats,
while lard and shortening (along with the animal fat you
see in raw meat) are saturated fats.

We can further distinguish the unsaturated fats between
polyunsaturated and monounsaturated. Unsaturated fats
are currently thought to be more healthy than saturated fats,
and monounsaturated fats (as found in olive oil and peanut oil)
are thought to be healthier than polyunsaturated fats.

Fat is necessary because: the only way to get certain
fat-soluble vitamins is to eat fat, your body has no way to
make certain essential fats, so you must get them in your
food.

Another reason is that fat is a good source of energy,
in fact it contains twice as many calories per gram as
do carbohydrates or proteins. Your body can burn fat as
fuel when necessary

5. and how can I loose weight by reducing carbohydrate
consumption?

Atkins diet and other low-carb diets are based on the theory
that certain carbohydrates have a greater impact on blood
sugar levels than others.

So you count these carbs. They are the ones that matter.
To figure out the net carb count of a food item, you need to
identify the carbs that don t have a high impact — those from
fiber and sugar alcohol, and subtract that total from the
overall carb count

Just regulate your blood sugar levels (from carbohydrates)
and you ll be able to better regulate your appetite… and
your weight.

Therefore, say Atkins diet proponents, the culprits are
carbohydrates and there is nothing wrong with eating as
much meat as you want!

What you should do is restrict carbohydrate consumption,
specially starchy foods such as bread, rice, corn etc…,
except for what they consider as “good carbohydrates”
such as high fiber vegetables (broccoli etc…)

According to them, the energy we need should be taken
from proteins, and sometimes fat, but as few carbohydrates
as possible, hence the name: low carbohydrate diet..

6 . What else does the human body need?

Mainly vitamins and minerals. These can be found in various
foods, fruits, etc..It seems the “Standard Western Diet” is
deficient in vitamins and minerals. This has led to the
creation of vitamin and mineral supplements.

7. Is Atkins diet efficient?

Anybody can note the simple fact that cutting back on
carbohydrates works, at least for a quick drop in body fat
and body water.

However, for most dieters the problem is the long-term
effects on the body due to such a drastic reduction in
carbohydrates.

Whatever Atkins diet proponents have said, this remains a
real problem and people like those at South Beach Diet have
tried to solve it by introducing carbohyfrates after the 14 days
initial phase.

8. What about the “fat makes you fat” theory?

According to Anthony Colpo, one of the most articulate of the
Atkins diet defenders:

“Some folks have been so inculcated with the simplistic
“fat makes you fat” theory that they just cannot believe
a diet high in fat can lead to a loss of bodyfat.

The fact is, high fat diets can result in spectacular fat loss
- as long as carbohydrate intake is kept low. Eat a diet that
is high in both fat and carbohydrate and your bodyfat
percentages will head north real quick! ”

9. Does Atkins diet cause coronary heart disease (CHD)?

On May 26, 2004 A Florida businessman filed suit against
the makers of Atkins diet.

The man claimed as a consequence of following the low-carb
diet, he suffers from severe heart disease, necessitating
angioplasty and a stent

One of the fiercest opponents of Atkins diet, the Physicians
Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) President
Neal Barnard, M.D, said that the diet proponents “push dieters
to avoid healthy foods, like rice, beans, and pasta, while
ignoring the risks of high-cholesterol, high-fat meat and
cheese. The idea that cholesterol and saturated fat don t
matter is a dangerous myth.

But what does the other side say? As expected, we hear
a totally different story.

Here is Anthony Colpo s take on the CHD issue:

“A low carb diet based on paleolithic food choices, that is,
a diet based on free-range animal products and low
carbohydrate, low-glycemic plant foods, fits the bill quite
nicely. So go ahead, eat your steak and salad!”

10. Are there any other health risks?

In additon to CHD – coronary heart disease – Atkins diet has
also been blamed for a number of other “atrocities”, such as:
colon cancer, impaired kidney function, osteoporosis,
complications of diabetes, and to cap it all: constipation,
headache, bad breath, muscle cramps, diarrhea, general
weakness.

A few quick answers to some of these accusations from
Anthony Colpo:

Kidney disease: “Bodybuilders and strength athletes have
been consuming high-protein diets for decades. Given the
widespread global participation in these activities, if the
claims of kidney damage were true, by now there would be
an enormous number of case studies of ex-bodybuilders
and strength athletes afflicted with kidney disease,” which
is obviously not the case.

Osteoporosis: “a low-carbohydrate, high fat, high protein
diet is a far better choice for building strong bones than
a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet.”

Quick and Easy Methods to Choosing the Best Carb Foods

April 14, 2008

Now, more than ever, it is important to educate ourselves on the fundamentals to help us choose the best carb foods for weight loss. Every day we are surrounded with advertisements tooting so called healthy foods, often fueled by the latest fad diet.
Carbohydrates are often categorized as simple carbs and complex carbs. If your diet is high in the former this can result in a cycle of short bursts of energy followed by sugar crashes which is when you suffer from cravings, mood swings and that lethargic feeling. Simple carbs include sucrose (table sugar), glucose, fructose (fruit sugar), and lactose (dairy sugar) and are not the best carb foods, especially for weight loss.
Complex carbs, however, are digested more slowly than simple carbs are thereby releasing energy much more steadily. Examples of complex carbs include bread, pasta, rice and vegetables. While it may be necessary to reduce your overall carbohydrate intake, having less simple carbs is much more important, because of their effect on your energy levels.
However, fibrous carbs such as green vegetables are one of the best carb foods you can eat for several reasons and you should endeavor to eat lots of these carbs. They are very low in calories, and in some cases even contain negative calories , which means that they contain so few calories that your body actually uses more calories to digest and process these foods.
When you choose the best carb foods to help you drop the fat, you should also ask yourself whether the food is natural or highly processed/refined. Simple carbs such as fructose which is what is in fruits, or complex carbs such as potatoes and fibrous vegetables are examples of the former. Sucrose, your average table sugar, and other refined sugars such as glucose and dextrose, as well as highly processed starchy carbs such as white bread and white rice, would come under the latter category.
Refined carbs are a terrible choice of food, and have little or no benefit to your body. Not only do these foods have many of the healthy nutrients sucked out of them, they are digested and processed by your body very quickly, like simple sugars are, which explains why you feel tired and lethargic after a typical Western lunch, especially when it s washed down with a high-sugar beverage.
You can also refer to the GI (glycemic index) values for another tool to help you choose the best carbs to help you lose weight and have more energy throughout the day. The glycemic index shows the impact foods have on your blood sugar. If the GI value is low, such as with lentils, it will not have a great effect on your blood sugar and you will have a relatively steady release of energy.
High GI foods on the other hand, such as white rice, unless eaten with a low GI food to balance the overall GI value of the food, cause your energy levels to shoot up and then shortly after drop right down. Not only does this sugar crash affect your mental performance and focus, as well as cause hunger and cravings, but the release of insulin which happens as a result sets your body up for fat storing, and limits its fat burning capacity.
It is also important to remember that refined carbs and sugars especially are very bad for your health, unless there is a need for them, which may be the case with athletes. On top of this, the GI values are very high, and we already have too much in our diet. What s more, when you add unhealthy fats to the equation, this can result in immediate fat gain. Fried foods, pastries and ice cream are examples of such foods.
What you need to keep in mind is that the best carb foods have little or no refined sugar and very little fat content. I would strongly recommend you keep away from foods high in refined sugar, and more so if combined with unhealthy fats. The shocking thing is that many fat-free and low fat foods are packed with sugar, which grossly misleads the general public. Also stay away from high-sugar beverages such as sodas, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks as much as possible. Joseph Cole has blown the whistle on the weight loss industry. Calcium: the Miracle Mineral

April 8, 2008

We ve heard it not only once or twice or even thrice but a lot of times. If you want healthy bones and teeth then pack up on the Calcium intake. While it is true that calcium is absolutely necessary to the health and strength of bones and teeth, this essential mineral also serves several other important purposes in the body. Yet, many people still routinely fail to consume enough calcium in their daily diets.
In addition to the benefits to teeth and bones, calcium plays a role in blood clotting, muscle functions, and the cell membranes maintenance. It is also important to the prevention of debilitating bone diseases, such as osteoporosis.
Despite the known importance of consuming adequate amounts of calcium daily, some research have found that as much as 75% of Americans do not have a sufficient daily intake of calcium. Comprising most of these numbers are those who are following strict vegetarian diets.
Fortunately, there are several varieties of calcium supplements available on the market. Adults need between 1000 mgs and 1300 mgs of calcium per day and should not exceed beyond 2500 mgs as overdose in daily calcium intake can cause other health problems. Your health care professional can help you to choose the amount that you need daily as preexisting conditions, such as bone loss or damage due to previous deficiencies, can make a difference in how much you should be taking daily. The most common calcium supplements include calcium citrate, calcium carbonate, oyster shell or bone meal based calcium supplements, coral calcium, and calcium gluconate and calcium lactate based supplements.
In choosing your supplement, you should be aware of how to read the label to ensure that you are getting the amount of calcium that you think you are. Elemental calcium is the term used for the calcium that your body will be able to absorb. Some supplements have this and other types of calcium, but it is only the elemental calcium that can count towards your daily intake. Calcium is absorbed best in acidic circumstances, which is why many supplements are recommended for use after meals, when the stomach acids are at higher levels.
Current research has found that calcium citrate is the most efficient of the supplements because it can be absorbed easily by the system. However, although it is absorbed easier and can be taken at any time of day, whether or not there is food in the stomach, this type of calcium supplement often contains less of the elemental calcium, and thus more pills daily will be needed. On the other hand, calcium carbonate is the most common over the counter calcium supplement. It has a special instruction though and that is it should be taken only after meals when there is increased stomach acid production. These, however, should be watched for sodium content.
Calcium is needed by our system to enable us to live healthy and normal lives. Insufficient daily supply of this mineral in our body can lead to numerous health problems causing not only a lot of damage in the pockets but also an abnormal lifestyle. To avoid these complications and inconvenience, it is therefore essential to intake the right amount of calcium needed daily by our body. A little research and consultation with a nutritional specialist can help you to plan your daily diet so as to be able to obtain the healthy amount of daily calcium.
